Volunteer at the Po Leung Kuk orphanage

Do you live in Hong Kong?

Consider volunteering some time at the Po Leung Kuk orphanage. Having been involved in helping the children of the Po Leung Kuk orphanage for nearly 11 years now, I can assure you that the rewards are huge.

They may be Hong Kong’s neediest children, but they are also some of the most fun children to hang around with. In the below video, Andy Mossman and Michelle McEwan explain about the Language Training Program, supported by the Foreign Correspondents’ Club Charity Fund. It is a great way to volunteer some time helping others.

UPDATE: For more information, please email Michelle at: michellem at ltp.edu.hk

Here’s further postings on the Language Training Program, now supported by UBS and the FCC Charity Ball

  1. It’s a wonderful idea !

But how can I help ? I guess they only need “native” english speaker, isnt’ it ?

Join us! Perfect English is not a requirement. I will put you in touch with Michelle.

    Hi:

I have more than a dozen toys – most new in boxes and some slightly used board games in perfect shape that I would like to donate. They are for the 5 – 8 year (mostly girls) age range.

Do you accept such items if I drop them off? If so, can you explain what hours I could do so – weekends would be better as I work – and please provide a full address.

    Thanks! Amanda

  8. The children at the PLK would love the toys!

    Thanks so much.

I will be in touch via email with details.

I just watched the introductory video you posted on your website and it looks very interesting! I will be coming down to Hong Kong from Singapore, along with three other friends and we are looking to volunteer in some sort of orphanage. We are very keen to teach the children English, and your program looks perfect for this! Would you be so kind as to reply to me asap at: [email protected]?

Best Regards and I hope to hear from you very soon!

    Hello,
Please can you tell me if there is a minimum age for volunteers? My daughter is 17 and is available on Friday afternoons. Her own school finishes at 1pm. She is studying for an International Baccalaureate diploma at South Island School. She is very good with children and is particularly good at art. She needs to fulfill a `service' criteria for her course, which is a commitment of 50 hours in total.
I am also interested in helping. Please let me know the hours/times that you need help

I have 4-5 large boxes of brand new preschool toys that I would like to donate to a worthy cause. They are samples and are all brand new. However I do not have any transportation so someone with a van would need to come and pick them up from Shouson Hill. Please let me know if Po Leung Kuk orphanage would be interested in these toys.

HI Thomas. Our daughter, Tallulah, is having her fourth birthday party in two weeks' time and in lieu of presents, we are going to ask people to bring a second hand toy or book which we can donate to an orphanage or charity. Would PLK be interested do you think? I hope we will have about 20-30 books or toys to donate. I would like to bring Tallulah when we deliver the books and toys. Would that be possible? I am reachable on [email protected]. If it's easier, please just send me the contact details of the appropriate person at PLK and I can speak with them directly.

I have loads of frozen breast milk which I won't be able to use up and would like to donate them. I have been tested for AIDS and Hep and can show test results. They are kept in 250cc/ 9oz sterilised freezer bags.

    please email me

    Hi,

I have been wanting to find a part-time or volunteering job in an orphanage after I came back to HK. I love kids and is thinking about adopting a child one day if situation is allowed. I think being able to get in touch with Po Leung Kuk's children first hand gives me a better idea about kids from orphanage and whether I would be qualified to be a foster mother. Please send me futher detail on becoming a volunteer for Po Leung Kuk.

    Thanks a lot,

I am fluent in both English and Chinese (mainly Cantonese), and I know a bit of Spanish…Can you please tell me what are some volunteering opportunies in PLK, like mentoring, teaching language classes, or being a big sib for some of the PLK children? I would love to see what I can help with!

Hello, this is Meilina and I am a Year 12 student in an IB school (Renaissance College) in HK. The year 12s are currently looking for CAS activities (Extra-curricular activities) and I would love to help the community in the orphanage through music performance. This may sound weird to you but I assure you I have organized a band with probably the most talented musicians who are also dying to contribute to the society through music.
I would really like to hear your thoughts on this and I hope you may reply me as soon as possible.
Here’s my email address: [email protected]

Thank you so much for your kind attention,
    Meilina Tsui

Hi, I'd absolutely love to volunteer – I'm only in Hong Kong for the rest of January but I'd really like to dedicate what time I have left to helping these children.  I can come daily (because I'm 18 years old and just graduated my gap year, so I have alot of time) and have worked as an english teacher for 3 – 15 year olds for the past 2 years at David Exodus Kindergarten.  My email is [email protected] and I also have two friends who would love to help out too if possible.  Please contact me as soon as possible with a means to volunteer :)

I am HK born and am looking for information leading to my birth records.  I understand I was in an orphange before my adoption. I'd like to re-establish my citizenship with HK and am willing to pay US dollars for information leading to my birth records. Please email me back if you can assist or know someone that can. I've already contact the Red Cros in HK but they do not provide this service.

  116. Ken_townend

Hi my name is Ken. My wife and I adopted a Chinese female from the Kuk in 1985 whilst I was stationed over there with the armed forces. The Kuk was an amazing place. Very underfunded then, but the workers were very dedicated and we loved going to pick up our little girl for day trips out and to help feed some of the other little children. It was just rooms full of metal cots, with little space. There was a play area fenced off that several children at a time were placed in every now and again with a pile of toys. They wold pick them up and chew on them with their noses running and drop it for another to pick up. Easy way for them all to catch and get over the usual childhood illnesses. Our daughter Zoe is now 27 and soon to marry. We hope someday we will be able to go back to show Zoe where we got her from before we are too old. We are glad to hear that funding for the Kuk is now better than before as we thought it may close on the handover to China.

  117. Many thanks for post, I will mention I made the equivalent thing while I got the matching problem as the one that is posting.

  133. Rosalynd

I am a 14-year-old HK student and my sister is 12 years old. We are very interested in volunteering at the PLK orphanage because we would like to make a change in the society and we love children. Even though we are not native English or Putonghua speakers, we speak both languages really fluently, and especially wish to participate in the Language Training Program. Would it be okay for us to become a part of it? It would definitely be no problem for us to tell stories or read aloud books to the children, even those older than us, especially if it's in English. If for any reason we cannot qualify, we would still love to help in any other way. We wish to take part wholeheartedly and will do our best if we can get involved. Thanks! Please email me at jkrowling08@ymail.com.
    Best regards,
    Rosalynd
